AppSense DataNow

AppSense DataNow

Posted by HTG

I see Project Orca has made it to public beta with a name change – it’s now called AppSense DataNow. AppSense are clearly trying to get on the wave of cloud data synchronisation which is being fuelled by the explosion in mobile device usage and consumer-driven BYOD initiatives, and trying to solve the headache IT departments are being left with as potentially sensitive data makes its way inexorably onto various sort of public cloud infrastructures. It’s certainly interesting – data management using the sort of granular controls AppSense usually provide sounds quite tempting. If they follow up on their promise to be able to integrate these controls tightly into existing storage infrastructure, then it sounds quite good. See here for the various articles covering it on the AppSense site.

However, the proof, as everyone says, is in the pudding, and I’m not going to go any further into speculating on whether DataNow/Orca lives up to its own hype without being able to kick the tyres. I guess this is a bit of a sidewards way of asking AppSense if they’ll honour my request to be on the beta program 🙂

Anyway, you can view the product datasheet here if you’re interested. If I manage to get my claws on a copy of the software, I’ll be sure to let you know whether it measures up to the claims AppSense are making about it.
